About

Discover Tsavo’s Dramatic Volcanic Moonscape and Local Myths

The Shetani Lava Flow is a massive, surreal landscape of jagged black volcanic rock formed only a few centuries ago by eruptions from the nearby Chyulu Hills. Named “Shetani” (meaning “devil” in Swahili) by early locals who witnessed the terrifying fire and smoke, this vast field offers a striking visual contrast to the surrounding wilderness of Tsavo West National Park.

Beneath the surface of the razor-sharp lava fields lie the eerie Shetani Caves. Guided by knowledgeable local experts, you can step underground into these volcanic tubes to see unique rock formations and hear historical tales of the wildlife and people who have navigated them over generations. This excursion is easily accessible from major safari lodges within Tsavo West and can be seamlessly combined with visits to Mzima Springs.

Whether you are a geology enthusiast, a photographer looking for dramatic backdrops, or a safari traveler seeking an active trek on foot, this flexible tour delivers a memorable off-the-beaten-path Kenyan adventure.

MadaAssist have been utterly brilliant! Extremely helpful, polite, patient and efficient. 5 stars are too few! I went on a city tour today with Christian (arranged by MadaAssist) and for 7.5 hours he showed me the entire city centre including some of the seedier bits which are usually interesting. As an ex fly half he could handle himself and I felt totally safe. I would rheartily recommend him and MadaAssist to anyone visiting this fair land.

I just completed a 22-day trip through Madagascar, including Morondaba, Tsingy, Belo Sur, Ifaty, Ranohira, Ranomafana, and the Pangalanes Channel, among other places. The overall experience was good, except for a minor initial disagreement regarding the agreed-upon price and some unexpected hotel changes. Communication with them is always quick and easy, and the payment method is secure. A special mention goes to our driver and guide, Antsa, a true gem. Besides being an excellent driver, he was always kind, friendly, helpful, and committed to making everything easier.

The tour was interesting, and the driver was good. However, we feel the travel agency should have informed us in advance about the guides who wait at the park entrances and accompany tourists to geysers and waterfalls. The booking confirmation made no mention of this at all; it only stated that park entrance fees, food, and drinks were not included. When we have no idea how much the guide’s services will cost, we don't know how much cash to bring, since credit cards aren't accepted in places like that.
