The Great Wildebeest Migration: Africa’s Most Spectacular Wildlife Event
The annual wildebeest migration is the largest overland mammal migration on Earth, involving approximately 1.5 million wildebeest, 400,000 zebra, and 200,000 gazelle moving in a clockwise circuit between Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Masai Mara. The herds typically enter the Masai Mara from the south between July and August, crossing the Mara River at well-known points such as the Musiara Marsh crossing near Mara Intrepids Camp, and the crossings near Sand River and Paradise Plain.
The Mara River crossings are the most dramatic phase of the migration. Nile crocodiles — some over 5 metres long — lie in wait, while lions and cheetahs stalk the banks. Crossings can happen multiple times per day or not at all; experienced guides monitor herd behavior and radio networks to position vehicles at the right crossing point at the right moment.
The Mara Triangle, in the western section of the reserve managed by the Mara Conservancy, is accessible via the Oloololo Gate and offers some of the most productive crossing viewpoints with fewer vehicles than the eastern reserve. Road access from Nairobi takes 5–6 hours via Narok town and the B3 highway into the Sekenani or Talek gates.
