Overview

Discover Masai Mara on foot on a guided bush walk from Nairobi

Experience the African wilderness from a completely different perspective on this 2–3 day walking safari excursion from Nairobi to the Masai Mara region. Unlike a vehicle game drive, a guided bush walk puts you at ground level — tracking animal footprints, reading the landscape, identifying plants used in traditional Maasai medicine, and encountering the smaller details of the savannah that a 4×4 safari never reveals. All walks are led by a certified naturalist guide accompanied by an armed ranger, exclusively within private Mara conservancies where walking is permitted.

Perfect for nature enthusiasts, birdwatchers, photographers, and travelers seeking an intimate, off-the-beaten-track experience in the Mara. KenyaAssist customizes your excursion: combine the bush walk with a 4×4 game drive, overnight accommodation at a conservancy tented camp, and optional sundowners on the open plains. Walking Safaris in the Masai Mara Conservancies: An Intimate Wilderness Experience

Walking safaris are not permitted inside Masai Mara National Reserve itself, but the private conservancies surrounding the reserve — including Olare Motorogi Conservancy, Naboisho Conservancy, and Ol Kinyei Conservancy — allow guided foot safaris led by armed Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) rangers and certified naturalist guides. These conservancies cover tens of thousands of acres of pristine savannah directly adjacent to the reserve, with the same wildlife and landscapes but far fewer vehicles.

On a guided bush walk, the experience shifts entirely from passive observation to active engagement. Guides teach guests to read animal tracks — distinguishing lion paw prints from leopard, identifying zebra dung, and following elephant trails to water sources. The walk also reveals the rich plant life of the savannah: whistling thorn acacia, used by Maasai to treat fever; Croton trees, favored by elephants; and the dense riverine vegetation along the Talek and Olare Orok rivers that shelters leopards and countless bird species.

The Masai Mara region sits in Narok County in southwestern Kenya, bordering Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park to the south. The conservancies are reached by road from Nairobi in approximately 5–6 hours via the A104 highway through the Great Rift Valley escarpment and Narok town, entering the conservancy areas via Aitong or Talek.
