About

Road, Train, or Flight Between Nairobi and Mombasa

The Nairobi–Mombasa corridor is Kenya’s busiest intercity route. The road (A109 Mombasa Highway) passes through towns like Athi River, Voi, and Mariakani, with optional game-viewing stops at Tsavo East National Park. Travel time is 8–10 hours by private car or bus depending on traffic.

The SGR Madaraka Express departs from Nairobi Terminus (Syokimau) and arrives at Mombasa Terminus (Miritini) in approximately 5.5 hours. It runs three times daily (morning, afternoon, and night). This is the most comfortable budget option with air conditioning and assigned seating.

Major bus operators include Modern Coast, Coast Bus, Dreamline Express, and Mash Poa – all offering economy, business, and VIP classes with online booking. Flights depart several times daily from JKIA or Wilson Airport with Jambojet, Kenya Airways, and Skyward Express.

This route connects Nairobi with Mombasa, and travelers often continue to Diani Beach, Malindi, or Tsavo from Mombasa.

I just completed a 22-day trip through Madagascar, including Morondaba, Tsingy, Belo Sur, Ifaty, Ranohira, Ranomafana, and the Pangalanes Channel, among other places. The overall experience was good, except for a minor initial disagreement regarding the agreed-upon price and some unexpected hotel changes. Communication with them is always quick and easy, and the payment method is secure. A special mention goes to our driver and guide, Antsa, a true gem. Besides being an excellent driver, he was always kind, friendly, helpful, and committed to making everything easier.

The tour was interesting, and the driver was good. However, we feel the travel agency should have informed us in advance about the guides who wait at the park entrances and accompany tourists to geysers and waterfalls. The booking confirmation made no mention of this at all; it only stated that park entrance fees, food, and drinks were not included. When we have no idea how much the guide’s services will cost, we don't know how much cash to bring, since credit cards aren't accepted in places like that.
